X-Moto is a novel and challenging two-dimensional motorcycle racing game.

Most of us are accustomed to the three-dimensional excitement of a modern racing platform. However, X-Moto has instead chosen to embrace the rather classic appeal of a two-dimensional system. Not only does this harken back to the "old" days of racing, but the player will be pleasantly surprised at what X-Moto has in store. Embracing more physics than head-to-head competition, the courses are very challenging while the pitfalls encountered along the way make for an exciting experience. What are some of the features which make X-Moto unique in comparison to its peers?

Difficulty

It should first be observed that X-Moto is very challenging and may not be suited for those who are looking for an easy win. This primarily arises from the fact that its two dimensions signal that the motorcycle is limited to only a certain number of moves at any given time. Although this could prove to be frustrating at first, the feeling of accomplishment after completing a difficult course is well worth the learning curve involved.

Terrain and Objectives

There is no way to physically "win" the game, but the player will instead have to improve his or her time while progressing through levels of increasing difficulty. More challenging courses will include such obstacles as pits, steep slopes, uneven terrain and even 360-degree loops. Points are obtained along they way by collecting "reward" objects including flowers and berries. As the game is completely devoid of opponents, the main purpose is to overcome the courses themselves.

Graphics and Handling

The modern player will note that the graphics are outdated in relation to more streamlined racing platforms. Although this may appear to be a drawback to some, a lack of graphics is certainly made up for by excellent responsiveness and hair-trigger control of the bike. Still, the straight and angled features will remind the player more of a game that was released in the latter half of the 1990s.

System Requirements

X-Moto is only 41 megabytes, so there are few memory requirements. It is able to be used with both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Let us finally look at some of the top advantages and pitfalls of this game.

Pros

  • A unique two-dimensional track layout
  • Realistic movements and excellent control

Cons

  • X-Moto can prove to be quite difficult as the levels progress
